COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

A counselling session

Life can bring a lot of ups, downs and changes. Some are expected and some are unexpected. Often we put our life on hold, continue the same old patterns and behaviours, and life can seem hard.

Counselling and psychotherapy is a safe space for anyone who needs support to help cope with the demands of life. Counselling will help you find new ways to balance your feelings and clarify your needs and give you strategies you can maintain to experience change.

It is essential that you feel comfortable enough to talk to your counsellor, who listens to you in confidence and hears you in the areas of your concerns without judgements. Counselling is a professional relationship between two people, the client and therapist, with the overall aim to achieve successful outcome in dealing with the sorts of issues you are facing by the end of the relationship.

People often seek counselling to help with:

  • Addictions to drugs, alcohol or other destructive behaviours
  • Experiences guilt and helplessness
  • Feelings of fatigue, loss of energy and irritability
  • Pessimistic or having negative thoughts
  • Real or perceived loss of talents, abilities and skills
  • Financial problems and concerns
  • Persistent sad, anxious or empty feelings
  • Loss of appetite or overeating
  • Loss of interest in hobbies and activities
  • Starting a new family, living abroad or finding a new job/career
  • Taking sexual risks, coming out or questioning your sexual identity
  • Thoughts of suicide, death and attempts at suicide
  • Unable to control emotional feelings
  • Inability to sleep or oversleeping
  • Worries about health, age or plans of retirement.

Through counselling much of our life distress, fatigue, loneliness and inner emptiness can be eliminated when deeper understanding of how to live fruitfully with ourselves is achieved.

This understanding helps:

  • To meet each others needs when in a couple relationship
  • It helps parents create a childhood for their own children that are free of the attitudes that add to future problems
  • Clarifies the root causes of emotional disturbances and a method of dealing with them.

Psychotherapy is another name for counselling and has been used in the past for long term therapy by going into past childhood experiences. It is a process of working with your inner child of the past where excessive parental attitudes may be continuing to influence you today.

Our childhood is not wholly behind us, it is in a literal sense can influence everything we now do and feel. It determines and dominates all our relationships with friends, colleagues and even our own children. The experiences and attitudes of the past can interfere with our ability to work or to love and psychotherapy is away to understanding how our childhood now affects the things we do and feel as an adult.

Psychotherapy can help if you are:

  • Being demanding, impulsive or inconsiderate of the right of others
  • Bored and can’t stick to doing something for long or unable to initiate individual effort
  • Constantly worrying about your health
  • Painfully self isolated, feel you don’t belong and unable to feel close to others
  • Striving to do better, never good enough or compulsively trying to achieve success
  • Are thinking of revenge for the past and being fiercely vengeful
  • Can’t stop procrastinating or being forceful in doing something
  • Questioning the role of sex, obsessed with physical sex, dissatisfied with personal relationships.
